Last night Annie Clark, more popularly known as St. Vincent made her first of three appearances in her hometown at The Kessler. After mentioning that it was nice to be home Clark began her set with “Surgeon” from her third recently released album Strange Mercy.
Having the opportunity to experience her performance at the small but classic venue that The Kessler is resulted in a sold-out show for two nights in a row. The intimacy of the night let fans truly voice their love for Clark. It was obvious that she was as excited to be back in Dallas as much as her fans were to have her back, turning this show into a unique experience.
As soon as the notes to “Save Me From What I Want” were hit, the crowd got a lot more excited to hear some selections from her previous album Actor. Other songs were “Actor Out of Work,” “Just the Same But Brand New,” Marrow” and “The Party.” All these and others from her debut album, Marry Me, were well received by all.
There were several times one could feel as if they were going to have a seizure with the choppy strobe lights that were synced to songs such as “Neutered Fruit.”
Through her set Clark informed fans a bit about the songs leading to the knowledge about “Chloe in the Afternoon” which comes from the 1972 French film “Chloe in the Afternoon.” She also described the plot of her music video single “Cruel” from Strange Mercy, which many enjoyed but were also very familiar with.
Although her latest album, which was recorded two miles from the venue, has a different feel from her previous work, Clark continues to captivate her listeners, also allowing them to get lost in her voice with the combination of instruments.
Sadly ending the night with “Your Lips Are Red” left all wanting a lot more of St. Vincent. Fortunately for those who were unable to get a hold of tickets Clark will be making an appearance at Good Records for a solo acoustic set performance at 3pm today. She will also perform once again at The Kessler tonight before embarking to another stop in her tour.
