Born and based in Minneapolis, hip hop collective Doomtree has gradually grown over the years to include many an emcee and producer in its ranks. The collective’s eclectic mix of hip-hop and punk influences, along with introspective, conscious lyrics—have allowed them to grow in size and in presence on the Minnesotan hip-hop label Rhymesayers Entertainment, where they regularly collaborate with fellow artists and other associated acts.
Originally founded when high school friends P.O.S. and MK Larada began making music with local artists Cecil Otter and Beautiful Bobby Gorgeous, the group later expanded to include Sims, Lazer, and Mike Mitclan after his return to Minneapolis. Dessa later joined after a chance encounter with P.O.S. after living down the street from him.
The band’s first effort in 2007, False Hopes, was released in between other “official” releases in mixtape form, and eventually led to two more albums: 2008’s Doomtree and 2011’s No Kings.
The group now includes emcees P.O.S, Sims, Dessa, Mike Mitclan and Cecil Otter and producers Paper Tiger and Lazerbeak. The collective maintains its own label affiliate on Rhymesayers Entertainment and has even spanned outside of music to produce print, including Dessa’s 2009 effort, Spiral Bound.
The band remains active in Minneapolis’ music scene by putting on shows every three to four weeks, along with the annual “Doomtree Blowout” in December. Their shows include DJ sets from Paper Tiger and Lazerbeak, live instruments, live poetry readings, and a fun, energetic experience for all concert attendees.
The group will be in Denton at Dan’s Silverleaf alongside Marijuana Deathsquads and Human Grove Hormones on Tuesday night. Come out and see what these Minnesotans are all about, and probably move your body too.
